Carrier density and multimodal links determine transit time variability and cost. Prioritize providers with established parcel, LTL and FCL lanes, proximity to major highways and port/airport access, and consolidator relationships to optimize routing and freight rates.

Benchmark storage (per pallet/sqft), receiving charges, pick-and-pack and packing rates, returns processing, value-added fees, minimums and billing cadence. Model cost-per-order across expected SKU velocity and seasonality to compare real TCO between providers.

Include order accuracy, OTIF (on‑time in‑full), order cycle time, lead time for inbound receipts, inventory accuracy audits, dock appointment adherence, shrinkage thresholds and clear remedies or service credits for SLA misses.

Request site visits and operational walkthroughs, review audit reports and certifications, run WMS demonstrations and integration sandbox tests, check reference accounts for similar SKUs and volumes, and negotiate a trial period or phased onboarding with defined success metrics.
